In Gujarat, significant efforts have been made to admit underprivileged and weaker group children into private primary schools under the Right to Education (RTE) Act of 2009. The second round of RTE admissions took place on May 21, 2025, resulting in more than 7,000 children receiving placements in schools. Parents are required to visit their respective schools and submit necessary documents by May 28, 2025, to confirm their children’s admission.
Following this round of admissions, the state has seen a total of 7,378 vacant seats across various mediums. This is broken down into 728 seats in Gujarati medium, 4,564 in English medium, 1,920 in Hindi medium, and 166 in other mediums. The state government has worked hard to raise awareness among parents about these opportunities.
For the academic year 2025-26, there were 98,114 seats available in 9,814 private unassisted primary schools under the RTE scheme. Out of these, 86,264 students were admitted in the first round. By the end of the first round, 80,543 students successfully confirmed their admissions by visiting the schools.
After the first round, there were 14,345 vacant seats available to help more underprivileged children benefit from RTE admissions. To address this, between May 15 and May 17, 2025, a chance for school re-selection was given to 89,445 applicants who missed out on the first round. During this period, a total of 45,695 applicants re-selected their schools, while 43,750 opted to retain their original selections.
The RTE Act aims to provide every child with the right to free and compulsory education. It focuses on ensuring that children from weaker sections of society can access quality education, which is essential for their development and future opportunities.
