Ahmedabad is set to address long-standing drainage problems in areas like Thakkarnagar, India Colony, Bapunagar, and Saraspur. Heavy rains have caused flooding and drainage backups in these neighbourhoods. To tackle this issue, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation plans to install new stormwater and drainage lines. This work will be monitored using CCTV technology to ensure effectiveness. The estimated cost for these improvements is around ₹8.50 crores.
Dilip Bagadiya, the chairman of the municipal water supply committee, explained that the drainage lines in these areas are decades old. They serve a mixed-use community of residential buildings and businesses. The narrow roads in the area make it difficult to replace the existing lines. However, maintaining the current network can help preserve the health of local residents and reduce frequent complaints about overflowing drains.
The use of CCTV for desilting will help in monitoring and maintaining the drainage system. This should reduce flooding issues and prevent sewage from contaminating drinking water supplies in the future. The Saraspur-Rakhiyal ward has drainage lines that are nearly 50 years old, which are now prone to blockages and breakages due to their age and heavy usage.
In densely populated areas like Amber Cinema Road, societies such as Saurashtra Society, Maheshwari Society, and Government A-Colony will benefit from these improvements. The new drainage lines will help to mitigate the problems of flooding and sewage overflow, ensuring cleaner drinking water for residents.
The initiative reflects the city’s commitment to improving urban infrastructure and enhancing the quality of life for its citizens. By investing in modern drainage solutions and regular maintenance, Ahmedabad aims to create a more resilient and healthier urban environment. Residents can look forward to a significant reduction in drainage issues, leading to a better living experience in these communities.
In related news, the Ahmedabad police have taken action against illegal sales of Chinese kite strings and manja, despite a ban in place. A suspect was caught selling these items in Thakkarnagar, highlighting ongoing challenges in enforcing city regulations. The police continue to investigate the source of these banned products and their distribution network, as the illegal sale persists despite clear prohibitions during festivals like Uttarayan. These efforts aim to protect public safety and uphold city laws, ensuring a safer environment for all residents.
