In Gujarat, a serious case has emerged involving a woman engineer and a contractor from the Paschim Gujarat Vij Company Limited (PGVCL). The contractor allegedly posed as a doctor at a civil hospital to deceive the woman. He claimed they were married, even though they were not. The woman filed a police complaint after experiencing repeated sexual assaults. The incident took place in Rajkot, where the police have registered a case under various sections, including sexual assault and atrocities against women.
The victim, who hails from the Gir Somnath district, mentioned in her complaint that she met the contractor, Karan Jodha Bard, through Instagram. He introduced himself as Dr. Aditi Singh from the Rajkot civil hospital. Trusting him, she continued to communicate with him through social media. Eventually, they started meeting frequently. During one of their conversations, the contractor emotionally manipulated her, stating that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer and that they should get married.
Believing his claims, she consented to marriage. However, he took advantage of her trust and assaulted her, asserting that she was not just his girlfriend, but his wife. This pattern of abuse continued, with the contractor repeatedly visiting her home under the guise of their relationship.
The situation escalated when the contractor made a call to another woman, threatening her. This call was later recorded and revealed that he was not a doctor. When confronted, he provided vague answers and continued his predatory behaviour towards the victim.
Further investigation led to the discovery that the contractor was involved in fraudulent activities related to government contracts. The victim’s scooter broke down, and during repairs, a GPS tracker was found, confirming suspicions of fraudulent behaviour.
The victim faced humiliation at her workplace, which ultimately pushed her to file a formal complaint. This case highlights the ongoing issues of sexual harassment and abuse that many women face in society. It also underscores the need for stronger protective measures for women, especially in professional environments.
In response to the rising cases of crimes against women, the Gujarat government has initiated a project called ‘Nirbhaya Project.’ This initiative aims to increase the safety of women, senior citizens, and children in major cities, including Ahmedabad. The project will use advanced technology to ensure public safety and reduce crime rates against women.
The Nirbhaya Project is set to be launched in eight major cities across India, including Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, and Mumbai. The aim is to create an integrated and intelligent police platform that allows for rapid response to incidents of harassment or violence against women.
With a budget of 220.11 crores allocated for a three-year period, the project aims to enhance women’s safety and ensure they can travel without fear. This initiative is a crucial step forward in protecting women from violence and ensuring a more secure environment for all.
