In Patan, Gujarat, a team from the Local Crime Branch (LCB) has arrested a Bangladeshi couple for staying illegally in India. The couple, identified as Rafiq Jalal Ghulam Sheikh, aged 28, and his wife Kajal Sheikh, aged 37, were apprehended in Dethali village, Siddhpur. This action was led by the Patan district police under the guidance of Superintendent V.K. Nayi and Inspector R.G. Unagar.
According to information provided by Deputy Superintendent of Police Pandya, the state government has recently directed police to identify foreign nationals residing illegally in Gujarat. This move comes in light of current national security concerns. The LCB team acted on intelligence suggesting that the couple had been working in the area for six months.
Upon investigation, Rafiq disclosed that he entered India illegally between 2010 and 2012 from the Bangladesh-India border. Initially, he lived in major cities like Ahmedabad, Mumbai, and Pune before settling in Dethali. Kajal, on the other hand, mentioned she had entered India illegally in 2010 and had also resided in Ahmedabad and Mumbai before their marriage in 2020.
During the police investigation, the couple presented various documents. Rafiq showed an Aadhaar card, a marriage certificate, and a birth certificate issued in Bangladesh. Kajal provided her Aadhaar card, a voter ID, and a national ID card from Bangladesh. The police are currently scrutinising these documents to determine their authenticity.
The couple does not possess valid passports or visas. They are now facing legal action under the Foreigners Act, 1946. The LCB is preparing to deport them back to Bangladesh. This case highlights the ongoing efforts by Indian authorities to manage illegal immigration and ensure national security.
The arrest comes amid a broader crackdown on illegal immigrants in Gujarat, as authorities aim to address the challenges posed by foreign nationals living without proper documentation. The police have urged the public to report any suspicious activities related to illegal immigration.
In summary, the arrest of Rafiq and Kajal Sheikh serves as a reminder of the importance of lawful residency in India. The police’s proactive measures reflect their commitment to maintaining law and order while safeguarding the nation’s borders. As the investigation continues, more details may emerge regarding the couple’s journey and their intentions while in India.
