Pollution Concerns Over Jamnagar Electroplaters

In Jamnagar, a serious pollution issue has come to light involving the local electroplating unit, BBC Electroplaters. The Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) conducted a raid after receiving reports of hazardous waste being discharged without treatment. Officers from the GPCB’s regional office found that acidic, yellowish polluted water was being released directly into open drains. This water, generated during the electroplating process of brass parts, likely contains harmful metals such as nickel. Such practices pose a significant risk to the environment and public health.

Manasukhbhai Chouhan, the owner of BBC Electroplaters, is also the president of the Jamnagar Electroplaters Association. The GPCB’s regional officer, G.B. Bhatt, reported that serious irregularities were observed during the inspection. Instead of treating the waste water, it was bypassed and dumped into the drainage system, violating environmental protection laws. This illegal disposal of hazardous waste, without using a treatment plant, is a serious crime.

Following the raid, the GPCB team collected necessary samples for analysis. A legal notice has been issued to the operators of the electroplating unit, and a detailed report has been prepared and sent to the main office in Gandhinagar. The situation underscores the need for strict enforcement of environmental regulations to protect public health and the environment in Jamnagar.

The GPCB is committed to monitoring such facilities closely to prevent further violations.
