The city of Patan is buzzing with excitement as preparations are underway for the 143rd Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath, scheduled for June 27. This vibrant procession will coincide with the auspicious day of Ashadhi Beej. The Jagannath Temple Trust and the Rath Yatra Committee are finalising plans to ensure a smooth celebration.

On Saturday, trustees from the Jagannath Temple Trust met with the district collector to discuss the upcoming event. They stressed the importance of maintaining order during the Rath Yatra. The trustees requested that the police take strict action against any anti-social elements to ensure a peaceful atmosphere. They also urged the Patan Municipality to address various issues along the route, including stray animals, potholes, and cleanliness.

The collector assured the trustees that all their suggestions would be taken into account. A meeting was held with officials from various departments to ensure complete cooperation from the government for the Rath Yatra.

The Rath Yatra is not just a religious event; it is a significant cultural celebration for the people of Patan. Leading up to the main event, various religious festivities will take place. For instance, on June 21, a special ceremony will be held to invoke blessings for the Rath Yatra. This includes a ceremonial procession where Lord Jagannath is carried in a palanquin.

The next day, on June 22, a water procession will commence at 9 AM from Ganesh Ashram, passing through several key locations in Patan before returning to the temple. This event will include traditional music and rituals.

June 22 will also feature a significant event known as the Netrotsav, where devotees will perform rituals to ensure the well-being of Lord Jagannath. This includes a special treatment for the Lord’s eyes using natural ingredients, symbolising care and devotion.

As the Rath Yatra approaches, preparations are intensive. The municipality is cleaning the roads to prevent any inconveniences during the procession. Workers have been clearing dirt, debris, and other obstacles from the route to make it safe for the large crowds expected to attend.

The Rath Yatra is a time for the community to come together. It strengthens the bonds of faith and unity among the residents of Patan. Everyone, from local businesses to families, eagerly participates in the festivities, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Gujarat.

In the days leading up to the Rath Yatra, various cultural programmes will be held, including devotional songs and traditional dances. These events will bring the community together in preparation for the main day.
