On June 13, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the site of a tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad. The incident shocked the entire country, leading to an outpouring of grief and concern. Modi’s visit aimed to assess the situation and offer support to those affected.
The Prime Minister inspected the medical hostel and mess building that were damaged due to the crash. He was accompanied by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and several central and state ministers, including Union Minister for Civil Aviation Jyotiraditya Scindia and Gujarat’s Minister of Civil Aviation Balvantsinh Rajput.
After visiting the crash site, Modi went to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital. He met with injured patients and inquired about their health. During his visit, he encouraged the families to stay strong during this challenging time.
The plane crash occurred on June 12, when Air India flight AI-171, headed for London, tragically went down shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. It has been reported that over 250 people lost their lives in this disaster, making it one of the deadliest aviation incidents in the country’s history.
The government has ordered a thorough investigation into the crash. Experts from the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau and international agencies have been called in to examine all aspects of the incident, including possible technical faults, pilot error, or even sabotage. The flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder will be crucial in determining the cause of the crash.
As part of the investigation, the Ministry of Home Affairs has tasked the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) to look into any potential foul play. The Secretary of the Home Ministry will lead the investigation.
Prime Minister Modi’s visit included a high-level meeting with senior officials and ministers to discuss the ongoing response to the disaster. The Tata Group, which owns Air India, has announced compensation of ₹1 crore (approximately £1,000) for the families of the deceased and will cover medical expenses for the injured.
The tragedy has raised concerns about aviation safety in India. Baba Ramdev, a prominent yoga guru, has questioned the role of a Turkish company that reportedly handled the maintenance of the aircraft. He suggested that foreign involvement in sensitive areas like aviation should be reconsidered.
As the country mourns, the focus remains on supporting the victims’ families and understanding the factors that led to this horrific event. The hope is that lessons learned will lead to improved safety measures in the future. The investigation is ongoing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
