On Tuesday, June 3, 2025, Ahmedabad experienced a sudden change in weather as light rain began in the afternoon. This unexpected rainfall came just before the IPL final match at Narendra Modi Stadium, leaving cricket fans worried about the game. Areas such as SG Highway, Gota, Sabarmati, Chandkheda, Prahlad Nagar, Pakwan Crossroads, Manasi, Shivranjani, and Drive-In Road saw rain accompanied by gusty winds. The weather department had forecasted rain across different districts in Gujarat, adding to the excitement and tension of the day.
In the recent past, the government has made significant efforts to promote traditional crafts and provide employment to urban and rural youths through various initiatives. The Commissioner of Cottage and Rural Industries has been actively working since 1992 to support artisans and craftsmen under the Industrial Extension Cottage (Indext-C) program. This initiative has led to the organization of 234 fairs and exhibitions over the past three years, allowing approximately 24,689 artisans to sell goods worth over 124 crores INR across India.
These exhibitions have been key in connecting artisans with markets, helping them to showcase and sell their handmade products. The Indext-C fairs include Ahmedabad Haat, Bhuj Haat, and Bopal Haat, which have collectively facilitated sales worth more than 99 crores INR, benefiting over 21,318 artisans.
In addition to promoting sales, the government provides marketing platforms for artisans to enhance their skills and improve their social standing. Initiatives include providing artisan cards, organizing fairs, offering permanent market spaces, and conducting skill development training. The state government has also awarded 11 artisans for their exceptional work in the field of crafts in 2023.
Gujarat is renowned for its vibrant culture and diverse craftsmanship, with many unique products representing its heritage. Some of these traditional crafts include Kutch embroidery, Patan patola, and various handloom products that have received the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag. This recognition helps local industries thrive and gives artisans global recognition.
The government continues to hold fairs and festivals in major cities like Mysore, Hyderabad, and Mumbai to promote Gujarat’s handicrafts. Efforts are also underway to establish permanent market spaces in cities like Vadodara and Rajkot, and to launch the PM Ekta Mall in Surat, further supporting local artisans.
As the rain falls over Ahmedabad, it not only brings a refreshing change but also highlights the resilience and creativity of the artisans who keep traditional crafts alive. The rain may have caused some concerns for cricket fans, but it also serves as a reminder of the rich cultural heritage that continues to thrive in Gujarat, rain or shine.
