Renovation of Jay Shankar Sundari Hall Announced in Ahmedabad

The Gujarat government has announced the renovation of the Jay Shankar Sundari Hall in Ahmedabad. This project will cost around ₹5 crore and aims to bring the hall back to life after years of neglect. The state has granted ₹1 crore for repairs. The hall, which is named after the famous Gujarati theatre artist Jay Shankar, was once a prominent venue for cultural events in the city.

Jay Shankar Sundari Hall has a rich history in Ahmedabad. It, along with other iconic auditoriums like Tagore Hall and Town Hall, was known for hosting various performances. Unfortunately, many of these venues have fallen into disrepair over the years. Currently, only Tagore Hall remains operational.

Located in the Kot area, the hall has not been used for many years. The state government has decided to return it to the Municipal Corporation for its renovation. This move will provide residents in the Kot area with access to a cultural hub once again. The Municipal Corporation will manage the renovation, ensuring that the hall is open to the public after the repairs.

According to Devang Dani, Chairman of the Municipal Standing Committee, the property card for Jay Shankar Sundari Hall lists three owners. These include the Education Department of the government and the Gujarat Music and Dance Academy. The total area of the auditorium is approximately 5,000 square meters, with 1,687 square meters built up. Currently, it has a seating capacity of 810.

The state government approved the request for renovation on July 7, 2023. The auditorium will be handed over to the Municipal Corporation for a period of 30 years without any cost. The government has also allocated ₹1 crore for the renovation work.

The hall has been closed for many years, and the renovation will involve significant repairs. This includes fixing the toilets, water lines, drainage, doors, stage, furniture, seating, and lighting. The estimated cost for these repairs is around ₹5 crore. A detailed survey of the auditorium will be conducted before the tender process begins.

The renovation of the Jay Shankar Sundari Hall is included in the Municipal Corporation’s budget for 2024-25. Once completed, it will once again serve as a venue for cultural performances and events, preserving the artistic heritage of Ahmedabad.

This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to reviving cultural spaces in the city. The hall is not just a building; it is a part of Ahmedabad’s cultural identity. By restoring it, the government hopes to encourage more artistic expression and community engagement in the area.

Residents eagerly await the reopening of the hall, which will once again become a vibrant center for the performing arts in Ahmedabad. The renovation is seen as a positive step towards revitalizing the city’s cultural landscape. The community looks forward to a future where the hall can host plays, music concerts, and various cultural events once more, bringing people together through the magic of performing arts.
