Rickshaw Gang Terrorises Visitors in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad is facing a rising threat from a gang that robs passengers using rickshaws. This gang targets people arriving from out of town. Recently, a woman named Dimpleben and her family fell victim to this gang while heading to a wedding. On June 5, they took a rickshaw to Kalupur railway station. After learning their train to Sabarmati was approaching, they took a shuttle rickshaw. Near the Commissioner’s office, the rickshaw driver stopped abruptly. He let another passenger off and then made Dimpleben and her family get out. Before they realised it, he had fled with their belongings. Dimpleben later discovered that jewellery and cash worth ₹1.32 lakh were missing. The Madhavpura police have registered a case and are investigating.

In another incident, Pushpaben Someshwara was robbed on June 22. She had just got off a bus with her daughter at Sanand Chowkdi. They took a rickshaw to visit her brother in Thaltej. Two men were already in the rickshaw, pretending to be passengers. They distracted Pushpaben by asking her to place a bag on the floor. The rickshaw driver then abandoned them on the road and fled without collecting fare. Pushpaben later realised that ₹23,000 had been stolen from her. The Sarkhej police have also filed a case and are looking into this robbery.

These incidents highlight a growing crime trend in Ahmedabad. The city has seen an increase in such robberies, particularly targeting unsuspecting visitors. Authorities urge passengers to remain vigilant when using rickshaws, especially when travelling alone or with valuable items. Passengers are advised to ensure that they use registered rickshaws and to keep their belongings secure.

The police are working hard to catch the members of this gang. They encourage anyone with information to come forward. The safety of citizens and visitors remains a top priority for the police in Ahmedabad. The city’s police department is committed to increasing patrols and monitoring areas where these incidents frequently occur.

In conclusion, while Ahmedabad is a vibrant city with much to offer, it is essential for visitors to remain cautious. By staying alert and being aware of their surroundings, passengers can help protect themselves from potential theft. Always choose licensed transport and be cautious of strangers in transit. The community must work together to combat this threat and ensure a safe environment for everyone.

For those who become victims, immediate reporting to the police can help in recovering lost items and preventing further incidents. The city’s safety depends on collective vigilance and cooperation between the public and law enforcement.
