Maya, an 18-year-old girl, recently faced a challenging situation after marrying a married man. She arrived at the Sakhi One-Stop Centre in Sola, Ahmedabad, on May 15. Seeking shelter and support, she was welcomed by the staff. The centre provides a safe space for women facing difficulties.
During her counselling sessions, Maya shared that she had married against her family’s wishes. Just a month after the wedding, she found herself in a tough spot. Her husband was already married, and Maya was feeling isolated. She did not want to contact her family or return home.
The staff at the centre reached out to her husband, trying to understand the situation better. After two days, they managed to speak with him. He was called to the centre for further discussions.
During the counselling, it was revealed that Maya’s husband had a first wife living with him. Meanwhile, Maya was not welcomed by his family. They did not wish to accept her into their home. This added to Maya’s distress.
Her husband imposed strict conditions. He told Maya that if she wanted to stay with him, she must complain against her parents. He even insisted that she could not return to her family home. This made Maya feel trapped and confused.
After continued counselling at the Sakhi Centre, Maya started to understand her situation better. She realised that her choices were leading her down a difficult path. The staff encouraged her to communicate with her family.
Maya expressed her desire to speak with her mother. Since her mother lived in Patan, arrangements were made for her to come to Ahmedabad. Maya’s mother and brother arrived at the centre, visibly relieved to see her safe. They were grateful for the support provided by the Sakhi Centre.
Maya’s family assured her that they would support her education and future aspirations. This was a turning point for Maya. With the encouragement of her family, she decided to return home.
The Sakhi One-Stop Centre played a crucial role in helping Maya reconnect with her family. It is an initiative under the Women and Child Welfare Department of the Government of India, aimed at providing shelter and guidance for women in distress. Many women like Maya find hope and help at this centre, navigating their challenges and seeking a better future.
