In Saurashtra, recent heavy rainfall has led to an increase in water levels in local dams. A total of 20 dams in the region are now on high alert as they are filled to 500 percent capacity. This situation has prompted warnings from local authorities to ensure public safety. There are 83 dams in Saurashtra, and more than half of them are currently filled beyond 50 percent capacity. For instance, the Aji-5 dam, which serves as a vital water source for Rajkot, is now 64% full, while the Nari-5 dam is at over 55% capacity. The Bhadar dam is also reported to be more than 42% full.
Over the last 24 hours, rainfall has been recorded at various dams across Saurashtra, with some receiving between 0.5 to 25 feet of water. Three dams have overflowed, resulting in the opening of their gates. Specifically, the Bhadar, Aji, and Nari dams in Rajkot have seen fresh water inflow. Out of the 83 dams in the region, approximately 50 are now showing water levels exceeding 50%.
The rainfall data from the last day indicates that the Bhadar-5 dam received 0.56 feet, the Moj dam 4.99 feet, Sodvadar 50.57 feet, Aji-5 0.33 feet, and Nari-5 0.56 feet of fresh water. Given the current conditions, all 20 dams in Saurashtra and Kutch are on high alert as their storage capacities have reached 500% or near that threshold.
Among the dams with critical water levels are the Dhatrawadi dam in Rajula, Surajwadi dam in Savarkundla, Kalaghoda dam in Mundra, Don dam in Madi, Vagadiya dam in Jamnagar, Goma dam in Botad, Bhim Mehda dam in Gadhda, and Rozdi dam in Mahuva. Additionally, the Ruparel dam in Jamnagar is 90.87% full, and the Sapda dam is 90.29% full, both of which are also under high alert.
The Ran dhola dam in Umra is 99.65% full, and the Shetangi dam in Palitana is 98.42% full. Meanwhile, the Dhodhadro dam in Morbi is at 95.85% capacity, and the Dhari dam in Vinchhiya is 97.67% full.
The ongoing rainfall has raised concerns among local authorities regarding possible flooding in low-lying areas. Residents have been advised to remain vigilant, especially those living near these dams. The situation is being closely monitored, and further updates will be provided as necessary.
