In a significant political shift, Shaktisinh Gohil has resigned as the president of the Gujarat Congress. He made this announcement during a press conference, stating that it was his last one as the state party chief. Gohil’s resignation comes after disappointing results in the by-elections for Kadi and Visavadar, where Congress failed to secure any seats. He accepted responsibility for the poor performance under his leadership. Gohil highlighted that the Congress party is initiating an organisational reform programme starting from Gujarat. He mentioned that appointments for district presidents would be made after listening to the voices of workers at the district level, which he believes will strengthen the party. Gohil praised the dedication of Congress workers who fought bravely in the elections despite being out of power for 30 years. He expressed his commitment to the party, stating that he is a soldier of Congress and would continue to serve in that capacity. Following his resignation, Gohil sent his resignation letter to the national president of Congress, Mallikarjun Kharge. Until a new president is appointed, the responsibility has been handed over to Shailesh Parmar, an MLA from Dani Limda. The resignation marks a crucial step in a broader organisational change within the Gujarat Congress. It will be interesting to see who the high command appoints as the new leader, which could signal the start of a new chapter for the party in Gujarat. Gohil clarified that his resignation was a matter of personal responsibility and he did not want to be persuaded to stay. He acknowledged the tradition of moral responsibility in Congress, stating that he wanted to honour that tradition. Gohil has been a significant figure in Gujarat politics, having held various ministerial positions in the past. His resignation could pave the way for new leadership and strategies within the party, aiming to regain the trust of voters in the state. The Congress party has faced challenges in recent elections, and Gohil’s departure may signal a shift towards addressing these issues more effectively. The Gujarat Congress now looks forward to a new leader who can bring fresh energy and strategies to the party’s efforts in the state. As the situation develops, all eyes will be on the Congress high command to see how they navigate this transition and what changes they will implement to rejuvenate the party’s presence in Gujarat.
