Shreyas Foundation in Ahmedabad has introduced a new initiative to encourage reading among families. Every Saturday, the school will open its beautiful campus as a reading space for parents, students, staff, and alumni. This initiative aims to help families develop a love for books. The reading zones will provide a peaceful environment where families can enjoy reading together. The initiative is called “Vachiye, Vistarie,” which means “Read Deeply, Grow Inwardly, Expand Outwardly.” It is inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s movement to promote reading through his Navjivan Press. The school will select scenic spots on campus, such as a cozy treehouse, shaded areas under large banyan trees, and the tranquil Srirangam Amphitheater, as ideal reading zones.
Yogesh Thanki, the secretary of Shreyas Foundation, expressed excitement about this initiative. He stated, “Some of the most beautiful and soul-enriching parts of our campus have been opened as reading zones, inviting everyone to pause, pick up a book, and be fully present.”
The focus on family involvement is vital to the success of this reading initiative. Thanki added, “To reduce screen time and develop a reading culture, it’s essential to involve families.” He noted that past reading activities in the library received limited participation, but many parents suggested that more open spaces could inspire more families to engage in reading.
The response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive. One parent, Jay Patel, shared his experience: “Thanks to the teachers, my daughter has started enjoying reading. Being able to share that experience with her on campus, surrounded by nature, is truly special.”
The Shreyas Foundation hopes that this initiative will rekindle the joy of reading, especially in a digital age where screens dominate leisure time. By providing a serene and inviting atmosphere, the foundation aims to encourage families to reconnect with books and each other every Saturday.
In addition to the reading zones, Shreyas Foundation also features the Shreyobharti Library, which houses over 35,000 books. The library includes various areas for reading, reference, and exhibitions. It is open for membership to all, including parents and patrons.
The reading zones will be open every Saturday, providing an excellent opportunity for families to spend quality time together. The Shreyas Foundation believes that fostering a reading culture within families is essential for the development of children. The initiative aims to create a community of readers who appreciate the value of books.
As the world becomes more digital, Shreyas Foundation’s initiative reminds us of the importance of reading as a shared experience. The setting at Shreyas, with its lush greenery and calm atmosphere, is ideal for families to engage in this enriching activity. The foundation hopes to encourage families to make reading a regular part of their lives, one peaceful Saturday at a time.
