In today’s world, online fraud is becoming increasingly common, especially with the rise of social media. Many people fall victim to these scams and lose significant amounts of money. Recently, a college student from Deesa in Banaskantha lost nearly 10 lakhs in an online fraud case.
The incident began when the student saw an advertisement for an online gaming machine at a much lower price than usual. Tempted by this offer, he decided to purchase the gaming machine. Over a month, he transferred a total of 9.97 lakhs to the fraudsters who claimed they would deliver a PS5 gaming machine.
The fraudsters, who were also students residing in a hostel in Hanumangarh, Rajasthan, set up a fraudulent link through YouTube to trick people into believing they could buy the gaming machine at a cheaper rate. The student, believing the offer was genuine, became a victim of their scam. The fraudsters gained access to his phone to obtain one-time passwords (OTPs) and make direct transfers of money.
The situation came to light when the student’s father noticed discrepancies in his bank account. Concerned about the sudden loss of funds, he investigated and discovered that his son had fallen prey to a cyber fraud scheme.
Upon learning about the incident, the father filed a complaint with the cyber police station. Following the complaint, police conducted a technical analysis and traced the fraudsters’ location to Jaipur, Rajasthan. They successfully arrested all four suspects involved in the scam.
The arrested individuals were identified as:
– Jugal Bhagirath Suthar
– Deepak Bhagirath Suthar
– Sunil Surendranagar Jat
– Pradeep Mamchand Jat
(All suspects are from Rajasthan)
Interestingly, these suspects are also students preparing for competitive exams. In their pursuit of easy money, they created the fraudulent link and ended up in legal trouble. This incident highlights the dangers of online scams in the age of social media, where many individuals are lured by alluring offers and ultimately become victims of fraud.
To protect oneself from online scams, individuals should exercise caution and be skeptical of offers that seem too good to be true. It is crucial to verify the legitimacy of online sellers and avoid sharing personal information or making payments without thorough checks. With the rise of online scams, awareness and vigilance are essential to ensuring safety in digital transactions.
