In Vadodara, a student has lost ₹7 lakhs in an online job scam. The student, named Hardi Maheshkumar, studies at a private engineering college. She reported the incident to the police, explaining her situation. Hardi was looking for part-time work to earn money while studying. On January 20, she received a call from an unknown person claiming to be from a company called Portia. The caller explained that there was a rating task available. For each rating, Hardi would earn ₹203, and she could potentially make up to ₹12,000 in a week. The caller reassured her that no payment was needed upfront and that she could just provide a five-star rating through a link.
The scammer also asked if she used Telegram and sent her a link to chat there. Hardi was told that her salary would be ₹25,000 and was given a salary code. The scammer asked for her personal information, including her bank account details. Although Hardi was invited to join a group, she did not join it.
On the first day, she was given three tasks. For completing twelve tasks, she was promised ₹500, and for completing other tasks, ₹2,200. She was told she could earn ₹2,700 a day by working hard. Hardi completed the review tasks as instructed. However, later, she was placed in a group where tasks were cut down. The scammer offered her prepaid tasks, which Hardi initially refused. But eventually, she felt pressured to register for these tasks, leading to an investment of ₹1,000.
The amount she was supposed to receive appeared on the link the scammer provided. She was repeatedly told she was doing well and was added to a VIP group. Hardi received a total of ₹9,518 but had invested ₹6,95,000. The scammer kept asking for more money, leading Hardi to finally file a complaint with the Cyber Crime Cell.
