Success in Indian Grey Wolf Conservation at Junagadh's Sakkarbaug Zoo

Junagadh’s Sakkarbaug Zoo has made remarkable strides in conserving the Indian Grey Wolf over the past seven years. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Gujarat has focused on wildlife conservation efforts to protect this endangered species. The Indian Grey Wolf, scientifically known as Canis lupus pallipes, has faced significant threats due to habitat destruction caused by human activities. The Sakkarbaug Zoo in Junagadh, located in Gujarat, has become a beacon of hope for the conservation of this species.

In the last seven years, Sakkarbaug Zoo has successfully bred 173 Indian Grey Wolf pups. The zoo implements scientific methods and modern facilities to ensure the health and welfare of these animals. Their conservation programme emphasises nutrition, health, and environmental management. Over the years, breeding numbers have increased: 14 pups were born in 2019-20, 7 in 2020-21, 31 in 2021-22, 33 in 2022-23, and 40 in 2023-24, with 48 expected in 2024-25.

To maintain the well-being of the wolves, Sakkarbaug provides high-quality food and necessary supplements. The zoo ensures safe and clean food and water. Regular health checks and immediate medical care are provided to monitor the wolves’ health. In response to adverse weather conditions, the zoo has established night shelters and strong enclosures for protection. Strict hygiene protocols are followed to maintain cleanliness in the wolves’ habitats. Vaccinations and deworming are conducted regularly.

The breeding management at Sakkarbaug Zoo is carefully planned. Pairs are selected based on genetic diversity, and mating, pregnancy, and feeding are monitored closely. Special diets, scents, and environmental factors are considered to encourage natural behaviours. After mating, the privacy and health of the female wolves are prioritised, with hormone testing and nutritious diets ensured during pregnancy. This comprehensive approach has led to successful conservation efforts in Gujarat.

Sakkarbaug Zoo serves as a model for other states in India, demonstrating effective practices in wildlife conservation. The zoo also aims to educate visitors about wildlife and the importance of conservation. With its scenic surroundings and modern facilities, Sakkarbaug Zoo has become a popular destination for families and wildlife enthusiasts alike.

For those interested in visiting, the zoo is located in Junagadh, which is well-connected by road and rail. The nearest airport is in Rajkot, about 100 km away. The zoo offers a chance to see the Indian Grey Wolf and other species, making it an important site for wildlife conservation and education in Gujarat.

As Sakkarbaug Zoo continues its efforts, it highlights the critical importance of wildlife conservation in maintaining biodiversity and ecosystems. Through dedicated programmes and successful breeding initiatives, the zoo aims to ensure a brighter future for the Indian Grey Wolf and inspire similar efforts across the nation.
