Surat, a city in Gujarat, faced severe flooding on Monday due to heavy rainfall. In just two hours, the city received approximately 6.5 inches (135 mm) of rain. The downpour began around 8 AM and was relentless. Roads flooded quickly, and many buildings, shops, and low-lying areas were submerged. Hundreds of local businesses were affected, causing significant disruption to daily life. The rainfall was so intense that it overwhelmed the city’s drainage system, which is designed to handle only 1 to 1.25 inches per hour. After two hours, the rain slowed slightly, but the total for the day reached over 9 inches (242 mm) by 6 PM. This was the heaviest rainfall in 40 years for the area, according to the municipal fire control department.
Authorities had to rescue 112 individuals trapped by the flooding, including patients who needed urgent assistance. Areas outside Surat, such as Kamrej and Palsana, also experienced heavy rainfall, receiving over 7 and 6 inches respectively. As the rain continued, many main roads were blocked due to high water levels. Police set up barricades to keep people safe and prevent accidents. The district education officer ordered all schools and colleges to close immediately. Students were advised to return home safely, and arrangements were made for their transportation.
The Surat Central Bus Station suspended all services due to the flooding, affecting around 200 bus trips. The rainfall was so heavy that it disrupted transportation and made it difficult for people to reach work or school. Between 6 AM and 4 PM, Surat recorded the highest rainfall in the district, while other areas saw significantly less. For example, Mahuva received only 43 mm of rain, and other regions like Kamrej and Palsana recorded 181 mm and 154 mm, respectively.
Residents reported seeing knee-deep water in many neighborhoods. The heavy rain created a situation resembling a mini flood. Many videos showed vehicles struggling through the water, and traffic jams were reported across the city. The intense rainfall raised concerns about the city’s preparedness for the monsoon season, as many people found themselves stranded or unable to leave their homes. Local authorities urged the public to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.
The meteorological department issued a red alert for Surat and five other districts due to the expected continuation of heavy rain. An orange alert was also put in place for 21 districts, indicating a need for caution. The intense weather has made everyday life challenging for residents in Surat and surrounding areas, as they navigate through flooded streets and disrupted services. As the rain continues to pour, officials are on high alert, prepared for further emergencies and working to assist those affected by the floods.
