Gujarat has been hit hard by heavy rains over the past few days. Surat district has recorded the highest rainfall, leading to severe flooding in many areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for 10 districts, warning of more heavy rains ahead.
In the last 24 hours, Surat city saw an astonishing 13.62 inches of rainfall. Other areas in Surat also experienced significant rain. Kamrej received 10.71 inches, while Palsana recorded 8.19 inches. The rains caused serious disruptions. Many roads were submerged, making travel difficult for locals.
Nandod in Narmada district reported the highest rainfall between 6 am and 4 pm, with 8.66 inches falling during this time. This was followed closely by Tilakwada, which received 7.13 inches, and Dahod with 7.09 inches. The IMD’s red alert covers Dahod, Mahisagar, Vadodara, Narmada, Bharuch, Surat, Navsari, Valsad, Daman, and Dadra & Nagar Haveli. These areas are warned to expect heavy to very heavy rainfall.
In addition to the heavy rain, an orange alert was issued for Wednesday in districts like Sabarkantha, Gandhinagar, and Bhavnagar. Light to moderate rain is also expected in Ahmedabad.
Due to the heavy rainfall, rescue operations are ongoing. So far, 2,865 people have been evacuated across the state. In Surat alone, rescue teams saved 542 people from flooded areas.
The situation in Surat has led to chaos. Many residents have been stranded as water has flooded their homes and streets. Some have even used tractors and boats to navigate through the flooded areas. The city is working hard to manage the crisis. Teams from the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) are out clearing waterlogged roads and helping those in need.
The heavy rains have also affected local infrastructure. Roads have been closed, and many families are unable to leave their homes. The Tapi River, which flows through Surat, has swollen due to the intense rainfall, causing more flooding in low-lying areas.
