Surat city in Gujarat has been hit hard by heavy rains, causing severe waterlogging. The rainfall began on Sunday and continued for several hours, disrupting daily life in the region. Many roads were blocked, making it difficult for people to commute.
The Purna River’s water level has also risen sharply due to the constant downpour in nearby Navsari and surrounding areas. This situation has made travel challenging, especially in areas like Tharad in Banaskantha district, where flooding has forced vehicles to struggle through submerged roads.
In response to these extreme weather conditions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Surat. This alert warns residents of very heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds. Additionally, a red alert has been declared for other districts, including Ahmedabad, Surendranagar, Morbi, Jamnagar, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Porbandar, Rajkot, Sabarkantha, and Banaskantha.
The IMD forecasts that rainfall may exceed 15 mm per hour, with gusty winds of up to 40 km/h. There is also a risk of lightning and localized flooding, which has led authorities to advise residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.
The weather conditions are expected to remain severe for the upcoming days. The IMD has also issued yellow alerts for the week ahead, predicting extremely heavy rainfall across Gujarat, particularly in Saurashtra and Kutch. These areas are at moderate risk for flash floods and transportation disruptions, especially in coastal urban regions.
The heavy rain has not only affected Surat but has also impacted several other districts. The IMD has warned that Dahod, Mahisagar, Vadodara, Narmada, Bharuch, Surat, Navsari, and Valsad will experience heavy to very heavy rain in the coming days. Other districts like Sabarkantha, Gandhinagar, Aravalli, Kheda, Anand, Panchmahal, Chhota Udepur, Dang, Tapi, Amreli, and Bhavnagar are also on alert for heavy rainfall.
Officials are monitoring the situation closely as the rain continues to fall. They encourage residents to take precautions and stay updated with the latest weather reports.
