Surat has faced heavy rainfall recently, causing significant flooding in low-lying areas and around creeks. In response, the Surat Municipal Corporation’s health department has launched a major cleanup operation. This operation includes medical teams and surveillance workers who are surveying affected areas and providing health services.
Mayor Dakshesh Mavani has reported that residents from the affected areas in Sanjay Nagar were relocated to Bhim Nagar School. Local corporators and officials visited the sites to ensure affected people received food packs and other necessary provisions.
On June 27, 2025, health teams worked in several zones including Kadarshani Nala in the central zone, and various areas in Udhna and Varachha zones. The cleanup efforts targeted areas like Shubham Industries, Saroli, and places near the Meghmalhar creek. The health department has mobilised over 1,049 sanitation workers, with 110 supervisors monitoring the operations closely. They used 14 JCB machines and 47 trucks to carry out the extensive cleaning tasks.
In total, 146 metric tons of waste were removed from these flooded areas. Additionally, 7,616 kilograms of disinfectant were sprayed to prevent disease outbreaks. The health department distributed 8,850 food packets and 3,150 bottles of water to those in need.
Moreover, 39 medical rapid response teams were deployed. These teams, along with 22 surveillance workers, handled health assessments for 64,038 residents. They distributed 30,569 chlorine tablets to ensure safe drinking water. During their work, they treated 365 patients suffering from various ailments, including fever and respiratory issues.
Health education was also a key part of the operation. Residents were taught about personal hygiene, the importance of boiling drinking water, and how to use chlorine to purify water.
In addition, the vehicle-borne disease control department sent 603 surveillance workers to survey a total of 99,587 households. They covered a population of 34,719, identifying 282 cases of fever. Samples were collected for diagnosis to ensure proper treatment.
Surat’s response to this natural disaster highlights the importance of quick action and community support during emergencies. The collaboration between local authorities and health teams has aimed to minimise the impact of flooding on public health and safety.
