Surge in COVID-19 Cases in Ahmedabad: Newborn Among the Infected

Ahmedabad is experiencing a sudden rise in COVID-19 cases, with 68 new infections reported in just one day. Out of these, 35 cases are confirmed in Ahmedabad city alone. In a mere two days, the number of active cases in the city has doubled, reaching 145. Across the state, the total number of active cases has risen to 265, which includes a worrying case of an eight-month-old newborn.

The increase in COVID-19 cases in Ahmedabad has raised concerns. On the 27th of the month, the number of active patients was 76, but by the morning of the 30th, this number surged to 145. The breakdown of active cases shows 6 in the central zone, 35 in the western zone, 40 in the north-west, 30 in the south-west, 4 in the north, 13 in the east, and 17 in the south zone. On the 30th, 35 new cases were reported.

In this period, 20 patients were discharged from hospitals. This month alone, Ahmedabad has reported 185 cases, of which 39 patients have recovered and been released from hospitals.

Disturbingly, a newborn in Ahmedabad has tested positive for COVID-19 and is currently being treated in the NICU at Sola Civil Hospital. Notably, the child’s mother had also tested positive last week, but her current report is negative.

On Friday, the state confirmed 68 positive cases, bringing the total number of active cases in Gujarat to 265. Among these, 11 patients require hospitalisation, while 254 are under home isolation. Rajkot is also seeing a rise in cases, with an additional 8 new infections reported, including 2 women and 6 men. So far, Rajkot has recorded 24 cases, with 19 confirmed in just the last three days.

In response to the rising cases, Health Minister Rushikesh Patel urged the public not to panic but to remain cautious. The state government is in constant contact with the central government. He advised that anyone showing symptoms of COVID-19 should isolate themselves. Currently, the Omicron variant is prevalent, and the disease becomes dangerous only if it reaches an advanced stage. Otherwise, it resembles a common illness.

In Gujarat, the number of COVID-19 cases continues to rise. Reports indicate that the total number of cases has now reached 190, with Ahmedabad accounting for the majority at 131 cases. Other districts with positive cases include Rajkot with 15, Jamnagar with 10, Mehsana with 6, Gandhinagar with 5, Bhavnagar with 4, Kutch with 3, and lower numbers from other areas.

As of May 19, only 7 cases were recorded, showing a significant jump of 183 cases within ten days. There has been ongoing testing to identify which variant is affecting patients. So far, only one new variant has been officially identified among the infected. The good news is that most COVID-19 patients are currently receiving treatment at home. Health professionals believe that the situation is under control, and there is no cause for alarm.

In Ahmedabad, by May 23, 38 patients had been reported this month, with 31 still receiving treatment. This rapid increase has heightened concern among health officials and citizens, although government representatives have reassured that there is no need to panic, but caution is essential. The majority of cases are from Ahmedabad, particularly in the north-west zone, where the highest concentration of cases has been identified.

Hospitals in Ahmedabad are enhancing their preparedness, with isolation wards being set up in Civil Hospital, SVP Hospital, and Shardaben Hospital. The Civil Hospital has arranged 1200 beds and has two oxygen tanks of 20,000 litres on standby. Notably, a 20-year-old woman with breathing difficulties is currently under oxygen support, although her condition is stable. An 84-year-old man is also receiving treatment in the hospital, while other patients are in home isolation.

As we move forward, it is critical for the public to remain vigilant and adhere to health guidelines to curb the spread of COVID-19 in Gujarat.
