Swiggy Limited, India’s leading on-demand convenience platform, has revealed that its Food on Train service is a favourite among students this summer. The service allows students to order a wide variety of meals, making their train journeys more enjoyable. From comforting biryanis to international delights like burgers and pasta, students are embracing this modern way of dining on the go.
In May 2025, students accounted for one-third of all users of the Food on Train service. Orders included local dishes, Asian cuisine, and even vegan options. The convenience of ordering food from their seats has transformed train travel for many.
Interestingly, students are not just opting for quick snacks. They are ordering large meals to share with friends. For example, one student ordered 30 thalis for their group on the Gondwana Superfast Express. This highlights how Swiggy is fostering a sense of community among young travellers.
Nagpur railway station has become a hot spot for these orders. Its central location on several major train routes makes it an ideal stop for students. Many students prefer to order food before their trains leave, ensuring they have a delicious meal ready for the journey ahead.
Engineering students lead the trend, making up nearly 70% of all orders. Top institutions like IIT Kharagpur and Vellore Institute of Technology are at the forefront. These students often seek both comfort food and healthier options. Popular fast-food chains like McDonald’s and KFC are common choices, but many also opt for wholesome meals from The Good Bowl and Lunchbox.
Another interesting trend is the use of Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) options. This helps students manage their budgets while enjoying their meals. Many students place multiple orders during their journeys, whether for breakfast, lunch, or late-night snacks.
Deepak Maloo, Vice President of Food Strategy at Swiggy, shared, “Students are really loving Swiggy’s Food on Train service! They’re ordering everything from different cuisines to late-night snacks, and even big group meals.” This demand is encouraging Swiggy to enhance its service further.
Swiggy’s partnership with IRCTC has expanded its reach to over 100 railway stations across India. This ensures that students can enjoy a variety of meals delivered directly to their seats. With a broad menu and reliable delivery, Swiggy is changing the way students experience food on trains.
