In Ahmedabad, a gang has been terrorising passengers by stealing valuables from them while they ride in rickshaws. The situation is getting worse as more cases are reported. Recently, a woman named Dimpleben, who was travelling with her family from outside the city, became a victim of this gang. They took a rickshaw to Kalupur Railway Station to catch a train. However, near the commissioner’s office, the rickshaw driver suddenly dropped them off on the road and drove away, leaving them stranded. Upon checking, Dimpleben discovered that jewelry and cash worth 1.32 lakh had been stolen from her.
The Madhavpura police have registered a case and are investigating. Another victim, Pushpaben, faced a similar ordeal. On June 22, she got off a bus with her daughter at Sardar Chowk and took a rickshaw to her brother’s house. Two men, pretending to be passengers, distracted her by asking her to place her bag on the floor. Before she knew it, the rickshaw driver had dropped them off and fled without collecting the fare. Pushpaben later realised that 23,000 worth of her belongings were missing.
The police are working hard to catch these criminals. They have noticed a pattern in these thefts, which often involve the gang posing as ordinary passengers. By gaining the trust of the victims, they manage to carry out their plans without raising suspicion.
In a related incident, Ahmedabad’s Civil Hospital has been a hotspot for rickshaw thefts. Over the past five days, five rickshaws were reported stolen. The Shahibaug police have arrested two members of a rickshaw theft gang, who have been linked to multiple cases of theft. They used old keys to start rickshaws and would abandon them in hidden locations after stealing them. The recovered rickshaws were worth around two lakh.
The police are also investigating if these gang members have stolen rickshaws in other districts. This ongoing investigation highlights the growing concern over safety in Ahmedabad. Authorities are urging citizens to be more vigilant when using rickshaws and to report any suspicious activity immediately.
In response to the rising crime, CCTV cameras are being installed in various parts of the city. These efforts aim to enhance security and deter criminal activities. Residents are encouraged to keep an eye out for any suspicious individuals and to report them to the police.
As the city grapples with these challenges, it is crucial for the community to stay alert and support local law enforcement in their efforts to combat crime. Together, we can help make Ahmedabad a safer place for everyone.
