In Mehsana, traders took a stand against rising thefts by closing their shops. This protest took place in the Vijapur Tower market area. The traders submitted a letter to the local police and the Mamlatdar, a government official, expressing their concerns. Recently, there have been multiple thefts in shops selling groceries, jewellery, snacks, and medical supplies. After these incidents, the traders organised a rally to voice their frustrations. They are demanding increased police presence to protect their businesses, especially during the night. The traders are asking for more patrols around the Tower Chowk area to deter thieves.
Police officers have acknowledged the complaints. Shailesh Singh Bariya, the in-charge police officer, assured the traders that action would be taken. Recently, police arrested a suspect in connection with the theft of 14 shops. This has given some hope to the traders. However, some traders report that social miscreants roam the streets during the day and night, threatening them and stealing items displayed outside their shops.
Nimesh Sukhadia, who runs a snack shop, shared his concerns. He said, “Some miscreants are active during the day. They threaten us and steal our goods.” CCTV footage from previous thefts has been handed over to the police for investigation. Traders noted that when there was a police station in the area, incidents of crime were much lower. However, since the police station and lock-up closed, they feel that police presence has decreased, giving thieves the freedom to operate.
The situation has alarmed the local community. The rise in thefts has made many feel unsafe. The traders believe they need more support to protect their businesses. They have urged local authorities to take their complaints seriously and restore safety in the market area.
In July 2019, there was a similar incident where a notorious gang was arrested in Mehsana for targeting parked cars. This gang was responsible for multiple thefts across Gujarat, with police capturing several members. They used various tactics to break into vehicles and steal valuables. After these events, the police stepped up their efforts to prevent further crimes.
Local residents are now questioning the police’s effectiveness in handling crime. One recent incident involved a man who attempted to commit theft but was caught by locals. After being handed over to the police, he was released, only to attempt another theft later that night. This incident raised concerns among residents about the police’s actions and their ability to keep the community safe.
Traders and citizens are now calling for more accountability from the police. They want a safer environment to conduct business and live their lives without fear of theft. The collective voice of the traders and local residents highlights the urgent need for action against crime in Mehsana. With their shops closed, they hope to draw attention to their plight and encourage authorities to take their demands seriously. The traders are determined to fight back against the rising tide of theft and protect their livelihoods.
