In Gujarat’s Gir Somnath district, traffic came to a standstill on Ronj Road State Highway. This happened when a pride of Asiatic lions decided to take a stroll along the road near Kodinar. The pride included two lionesses and eight playful cubs, and they had strayed from nearby forest areas.
The sighting has captured the attention of many drivers and local residents. As per reports, Kodinar is just an hour away from Gir National Park, the only natural habitat of Asiatic lions. Recently, there have been multiple lion sightings in the area, with the pride frequently seen wandering near villages and public roads.
A video of the lions walking on the highway has gone viral on social media. This incident coincides with an ongoing lion mating programme in the region. Experts believe that mosquito infestations in forest zones could be pushing the lions toward human areas, as they seek a more comfortable habitat.
This is not the first time lions have disrupted traffic. In February, a similar incident occurred on the Bhavnagar-Somnath Highway. An Asiatic lion was seen walking across a bridge in Amreli district, causing traffic to pause for almost 15 minutes until the lion left the road and headed toward a nearby temple.
The lion population in Gujarat has been increasing steadily. According to the 16th Asiatic Lion Census, announced in May by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, the state is now home to 891 lions. This is a significant rise from the previous census five years ago, which reported only 674 lions. The census covered 11 districts, including Junagadh, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Gir Somnath, and Rajkot.
The rise in the lion population is a positive sign for wildlife conservation in Gujarat. However, it also raises concerns about human-wildlife conflict.
