A tragic incident occurred in Bhavnagar, Gujarat, on Thursday, resulting in the deaths of two pedestrians and injuries to two others. The accident took place at around 4:30 pm near Bhagwati Circle and Shakti Mataji Temple in the Kaliyabid area. A Hyundai Creta, reportedly driven at high speed by Harshrajsinh Gohil, the son of a police officer, crashed into pedestrians and two scooters.
The victims were identified as Bhargav Bhatti, aged 30, who worked for a private firm, and Champa Vachhani, 65, who succumbed to her injuries during treatment at the hospital. Eyewitness accounts suggest that Harshrajsinh was racing a friend and driving recklessly when the accident occurred.
Deputy Superintendent of Police R R Singhal reported that Harshrajsinh contacted his father immediately following the crash. Thanks to quick communication with the control room, an ambulance was dispatched promptly, providing timely medical assistance to the injured.
Initially, the Nilambaug police registered a case under BNS 106(a) for causing death by negligence. However, after reviewing CCTV footage of the incident, more serious charges were filed against Harshrajsinh, including Section 106, which pertains to culpable homicide not amounting to murder. This is a non-bailable offence that carries a minimum sentence of seven years in prison.
Harshrajsinh is currently in police custody as the investigation continues. This incident has raised concerns within the community, especially as it occurred in a busy area frequented by students and locals, making it even more alarming. Many are calling for stricter actions against reckless driving, especially when it involves the family of law enforcement officers.
