Gandhinagar, the capital of Gujarat, faced a dreadful start on the first day of July 2025. Two major accidents occurred on the same day, bringing sorrow to the city. In one incident, a young child drowned in an artificial lake created by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). Just hours later, a car carrying five passengers fell into the Nabhoi canal.
The first tragedy involved a 7-year-old boy named Kuldeep Gafurbhai Bhervad. He drowned while playing near the lake in Sector 1, where the AMC is carrying out construction work under the Sujalam Sufalam scheme. Kuldeep’s uncle, Vishnubhai Bhervad, expressed his grief and anger towards the AMC, blaming them for the lack of safety measures.
Kuldeep had left his home around 4:30 PM to play with friends. When he did not return by evening, his family started searching for him. They filed a missing person report at the Sector 7 police station later that night.
After inquiring with the other children, it was discovered that Kuldeep had been playing by the lake. The Gandhinagar Fire Brigade was called to search for him. Tragically, they found his body in the lake. Vishnubhai Bhervad criticized the AMC, stating that the area lacked proper safety measures, which contributed to this unfortunate incident.
Soon after this incident, news broke of another accident. A car carrying five people veered off the road and fell into the Nabhoi canal. The fire brigade quickly arrived at the scene to conduct a rescue operation. They managed to recover one female passenger’s body, while the search for the others continues.
These two accidents have raised concerns about safety in Gandhinagar. Local residents are calling for better regulations and safety protocols, especially around water bodies. Many are worried that without proper measures, such tragedies could happen again.
Officials have yet to release statements regarding the incidents, but the community is demanding answers. They are urging the AMC to implement safety features around the lake and for drivers to be more cautious when driving near canals.
The city of Gandhinagar has been working on various development projects, but incidents like these cast a shadow on their progress. Residents hope that the government will take steps to prevent such accidents in the future.
As the search continues for the missing passengers in the canal, the community mourns the loss of young Kuldeep. His family is devastated, and many in the neighbourhood are rallying to support them during this tragic time. They are also pushing for a safer environment for all children playing in the area.
In light of these events, it is crucial for authorities to reassess safety measures around water bodies and ensure that such incidents do not happen again. The community deserves to feel safe, especially in their own neighbourhoods. The loss of innocent lives is a painful reminder of the importance of vigilance and care in our daily lives.
