In Sabarkantha district, two young men tragically drowned recently while trying to take selfies near the Sabarmati River and a waterfall in Vijaynagar. Continuous rainfall has caused rivers and waterfalls to overflow, making these areas dangerous for visitors.
On Sunday, a young man named Nilesh Parmar from Rajpura village in Ahmedabad was visiting the area with his family for an asthi visarjan ceremony. After performing the ritual, he and his cousins went to see the river. While trying to take a selfie, Nilesh lost his footing and fell into the river. Family members raised an alarm, attracting a crowd of onlookers. The local fire brigade was notified and arrived quickly to search for Nilesh.
Sadly, after a long search of more than twelve hours, his body was recovered from the river. His family reported the incident to the local police station.
In a separate incident, another young man named Alpesh Menat visited a temple in Kanadar village, near Vijaynagar, with friends. They went to see a nearby waterfall, where Alpesh decided to take a selfie. While doing so, he slipped on a wet rock and fell into the water. Despite rescue efforts, he could not be found immediately, leading to a tragic loss of life.
Authorities are concerned about these incidents, as many visitors ignore safety warnings and venture too close to flowing water for photos. Local officials urge people to exercise caution, especially during the monsoon season when rivers can become extremely dangerous. They recommend that visitors stay at a safe distance from riverbanks and waterfalls to avoid accidents.
The Sabarkantha district, which includes towns like Himmatnagar, is known for its natural beauty, but it can also be perilous during heavy rains. These recent drownings serve as a reminder of the risks involved in seeking the perfect photo. Local officials encourage everyone to prioritise safety over social media posts.
The district has seen a rise in accidents related to selfie-taking, prompting calls for increased public awareness and safety measures in popular tourist spots. As the monsoon season continues, it is crucial for visitors to respect nature and heed safety warnings to prevent further tragedies.
