In a tragic incident, two medical students from Gotri GMERS College drowned in the Narmada Canal near Ankodiya in Vadodara district on Wednesday. The students, identified as Prem Matang from Jamnagar and Aditya Ramakrishna from Surat, were out for a walk with friends when they fell into the canal.
According to police reports, the two friends allegedly slipped and fell while walking near the canal’s edge. It remains unclear if they intended to enter the water for a swim. Emergency services were quickly notified, and rescue teams from the fire department were dispatched to the scene.
Sadly, both bodies were retrieved from the canal and sent to Gotri Medical College for proper procedures. A local resident expressed sadness over the event, stating, “It’s heartbreaking to hear about these young lives lost. The canal can be deceptively dangerous during these heavy rains.”
The incident occurred amid heavy rainfall warnings across Gujarat. The Meteorological Department had issued alerts for severe weather, including heavy to very heavy rain expected throughout the state.
The rainfall this year has been notably stronger, with Gujarat recording an average of 20 percent more rain compared to the same period last year. As of June 25, the state received an average of 8.42 inches of rain, significantly higher than last year’s 1.67 inches.
Due to the relentless rain, several areas in Gujarat have faced flooding, making conditions more perilous. The Vadodara Taluka Police have registered a case of accidental death and are conducting an investigation into the incident. The college community and families of the victims are in deep shock following this heartbreaking loss.
This incident highlights the importance of safety near water bodies, especially during the monsoon season. Authorities urge the public to exercise caution and avoid risky areas during heavy rainfall. As the investigation continues, the community remains in mourning for the young lives lost too soon.
