A tragic incident occurred on June 12, 2025, when an Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad. The flight, destined for Gatwick, was carrying 242 people, including 2 pilots and 10 crew members. The aircraft took off at 1:39 PM but lost signal just after reaching an altitude of 625 feet. The plane crashed into a residential area just 10 minutes after takeoff. Reports indicate that the pilot had only one minute to react before the crash.
Eyewitnesses reported a loud bang as the aircraft collided with a building near the medical college. Among the passengers were 52 British citizens, 7 from Portugal, and one Canadian. Sadly, many are feared dead, with only one survivor reported so far.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched an investigation into the crash. They have confirmed that the aircraft had no prior technical issues. The pilot, Captain Sumit Sabharwal, had over 8,200 hours of flying experience, while First Officer Clive Kunder had 1,100 hours.
Following the crash, local authorities quickly mobilised emergency services. Four IAS officers were assigned to manage the emergency response at the civil hospital in Ahmedabad. The Chief Minister of Gujarat, Bhupendra Patel, visited the hospital to oversee the treatment of injured passengers. Many survivors were transferred to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, with reports indicating around 50 people were injured, some in critical condition.
Local police confirmed that the only survivor found was Ramesh Vishwas Kumar, who was seated in 11A. He is currently receiving treatment for his injuries. The crash caused panic in the surrounding area, leading to several fatalities among local residents as well.
In response to this disaster, the Tata Group has pledged to provide Rs 1 crore in compensation to the families of those who lost their lives and cover the medical expenses for the injured. They also announced plans to assist in the construction of a hostel at the medical college affected by the crash.
The black box from the aircraft has been recovered and will provide vital information about the moments leading up to the crash. Investigators hope the data will shed light on the reasons behind this tragic event.
