On June 12, Ahmedabad faced a shocking event when an Air India flight crashed shortly after takeoff. The flight, which was heading to London, had 242 people on board, including two pilots and ten cabin crew members. It took off and crashed just two minutes later near a hostel in Meghani Nagar. Sadly, the majority of the passengers lost their lives in this tragic incident.
Among the victims was Clive Kunder, a family friend of Bollywood actor Vikrant Massey. Massey expressed his deep sadness on social media, stating, “My condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the Ahmedabad plane crash. My uncle, Clifford Kunder, lost his son, Clive Kunder, who was the first officer on the flight.”
The crash also resulted in the death of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. He was on the flight to meet his daughter and wife in London. The flight contained 169 Indian passengers, 53 British, one Canadian, and seven Portuguese citizens. The news of the incident shocked the nation, and many political leaders paid tribute to Rupani.
The flight took off from Ahmedabad and crashed moments later. It hit a building, leading to a massive fire. Rescue operations are ongoing, with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) involved in the efforts. The cause of the crash is still under investigation, with initial reports suggesting a technical failure in the flight’s engine.
Experts are concerned about air safety, especially during takeoff and landing, which are the most critical phases of flight. In 2023 alone, there have been 109 aviation incidents worldwide, with 37 occurring during takeoff.
This incident raises questions about flight safety regulations in India. The history of plane crashes in the country has been long and tragic, often attributed to technical failures, human error, or adverse weather conditions. The aviation industry must work towards improving safety measures to prevent such disasters in the future.
As the investigation continues, many families are left grieving for their loved ones. The aviation community and passengers worldwide are reminded of the fragility of life and the importance of safety in air travel. Vikrant Massey’s heartfelt message reflects the sorrow felt across the nation, as many mourn those lost in this heartbreaking tragedy.
