A tragic plane crash occurred in Ahmedabad, India, resulting in the deaths of many medical interns. The Air India aircraft collided with a hostel’s dining area at the B.J. Medical College. At the time of the crash, numerous medical students were enjoying their meals inside the hostel. One part of the aircraft got stuck on the top of the building.
Rescue workers reported that approximately 30 to 35 bodies were recovered from the site, but many are still trapped in the debris. The incident shocked the local community and raised concerns about safety regulations concerning flight operations near residential areas.
The Additional Secretary of the Gujarat Health and Family Welfare Department, Dhananjay Dwivedi, confirmed the crash’s aftermath. He stated that the hostel, staff quarters, and other living areas of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital are situated in the vicinity of the crash site. Several residents in the area were also injured during this unfortunate incident. About 50 injured individuals were taken to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital for treatment.
The fire from the aircraft caused thick smoke, blackening the hostel building. The scene was chaotic, with debris scattered everywhere. The hostel now resembles a ruin, and around 50 doctors were injured, prompting immediate medical attention.
Dwivedi mentioned that DNA testing arrangements were made at B.J. Medical College to help identify the deceased. Families and close friends, especially parents and children of the victims, have been requested to submit their samples at the site to facilitate early identification of the victims. Furthermore, he added that Civil Hospital Ahmedabad has set up two helplines for relatives of the passengers and other injured individuals for any inquiries related to the disaster.
The crash has highlighted the need for stricter safety measures regarding flight operations near populated areas to prevent future tragedies. Local authorities are expected to conduct thorough investigations into the incident to understand how such a disaster occurred and to ensure that safety protocols are enforced.
As the community mourns the loss of young lives, many are coming together to provide support to the affected families. Vigils and memorial services are being planned in memory of the victims, reflecting the collective grief and solidarity of the community in this difficult time. The incident serves as a painful reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of safety regulations in aviation.
