The current Director General of Police (DGP) of Gujarat, IPS Vikas Sahay, has received a significant six-month extension from the state government. This decision comes as he was set to retire on June 30, 2025. With this extension, Vikas Sahay will remain in his position as DGP for an additional six months. There had been strong discussions about extending his term even before this announcement.
Historically, several DGP officers in Gujarat have received extensions in the past. Under Sahay’s leadership, the Gujarat police force will continue its operations for the next six months. The main goal of the state police is to maintain public order while considering the state’s diversity, constitutional framework, and legal provisions. The police also focus on internal security, crime detection, and prevention.
To achieve these goals, the police department promotes a professional approach, dedication to duty, practical problem-solving, and sensitivity to public expectations. Vikas Sahay, who belongs to the 1989 IPS batch, has had a notable career in various roles within the police department. He trained at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy in Hyderabad and has been involved in significant missions, including UN peacekeeping in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1998-99.
Throughout his career, Sahay has held various important positions. He served as the Superintendent of Police (SP) in Anand and Ahmedabad Rural in the early 2000s. He also took on roles as Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) for traffic and in charge of security in Ahmedabad. In 2010, he was selected as the Inspector General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Intelligence Bureau.
Sahay played an essential role in establishing the country’s first police university, the Raksha Shakti University, and served as its Director General until 2016. His leadership helped the university gain prominence in internal security education and research. He has received multiple prestigious awards, including the President’s Police Medal for Meritorious Service and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service.
As of now, Sahay continues to serve as the Additional Director General of Police for training and holds the position of Director General at Raksha Shakti University. His extension as DGP ensures continuity in leadership for the Gujarat police during a critical period. The announcement was made by the Gujarat government amid ongoing discussions about police reforms and safety measures in the state.
In recent months, Vikas Sahay has also emphasized the importance of safety measures for school trips. He mandated that two police officers must accompany every school-organised trip across Gujarat, a move aimed at enhancing the safety of children during outings. This directive applies to government, semi-government, and private schools alike. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the relationship between law enforcement and young citizens.
As the education sector receives substantial financial support from the Gujarat government, with nearly Rs 59,999 crore allocated for the 2024-25 financial year, the police’s involvement in school activities is seen as a positive step. The aim is to foster trust and cooperation between students and the police, promoting a safer environment for education.
Overall, Vikas Sahay’s extension as DGP signifies the government’s confidence in his leadership. The Gujarat police force will continue to operate under his guidance, working towards maintaining safety and order in the state. The next few months will be crucial as they adapt to various challenges and implement new strategies for community policing and public safety.
