In Khokhara village of Naswadi taluka, residents have been left cut off from the outside world after heavy rains washed away a newly constructed drainage system. Despite years of independence, the village, home to around 600 people, still lacks a permanent road. The drainage system was built by the local gram panchayat but was washed away in the first rains of the season.
The villagers gathered near the washed-out drainage area to protest. They have repeatedly requested the local authorities for a proper road but have seen no action. Children are unable to attend the primary school located across the drainage because it is now too dangerous to cross.
The villagers have been demanding a proper road for years. Each election cycle, politicians visit and promise to improve infrastructure, but nothing has changed. The lack of a reliable road makes it difficult for villagers to access medical care, leading to severe consequences during emergencies.
Sajiyabhai Dungarabhil, a villager, expressed frustration. He stated, “We have been voting for the ruling party for years, yet our village still lacks a proper road. Leaders come to collect votes but do not care about our difficulties.” Villagers are worried that without proper roads, their children would remain uneducated.
Praveenbhai Dungarabhil added that they have approached local officials many times, but their pleas have gone unheard. He emphasized how the village is in dire need of a road, especially during the monsoon season when rain makes conditions worse.
The condition of infrastructure in Naswadi taluka is poor. Many villages face similar issues during the rainy season, where they become isolated for months. The government often talks about development, but the reality for many villages is bleak.
Villagers are now considering a larger protest to demand action. They feel that if their needs are continually ignored, they have no choice but to escalate their efforts to get noticed.
The situation in Khokhara is a reminder of the challenges faced by rural communities in Gujarat. Despite government grants and promises, many villages remain without basic infrastructure. It highlights the need for immediate action to improve road access for the welfare of the community.
