In Naswadi, a significant problem has arisen due to a fire at a transformer used in the Pochamba water supply scheme. This incident has left 119 villages struggling for water during the monsoon season. The transformer, located near the Tilakwada branch canal, has been out of service for three days, causing delays in the water supply. Around 3,000 residents are currently facing difficulties because of this issue.
The Pochamba water supply scheme is crucial for these villages, as it provides filtered water sourced from the Narmada river. Water is pumped from the canal to reach Pochamba, where it is then distributed to the villages. However, with the transformer damaged, the pumping operations have been halted, resulting in a severe shortage of water. Some villages rely solely on this scheme for their water supply.
Residents have expressed their frustration over the situation. They have reported that the water supply department informed the Madhya Gujarat Electricity Company about the transformer damage, but no repairs have been made for three days. This delay is especially troubling as it is the monsoon season, when access to clean water is essential. Without proper water supply, villagers are left with few alternatives.
In addition to the transformer issue, there are other water supply concerns in Naswadi. For instance, in the village of Ambapura, a newly constructed water tank has not been functioning properly. The tank has leaks, causing water to spill out, and residents have repeatedly appealed to water supply officials for help, but their concerns have gone unaddressed.
Ambapura has a population of about 500 people, and the village relies on a single borewell, which is often insufficient. This has led to serious water shortages, especially during the dry months when other water sources are not available.
In another village, Vaghiya, a water supply scheme was set up seven years ago, yet the residents have never received any water from it. Despite the government investing significant funds in this project, the situation remains dire. Villagers are calling for accountability from the officials, as they believe that their needs are being ignored. They argue that proper inspections and repairs are necessary to ensure that water reaches their homes.
The ongoing issues highlight the challenges faced by rural areas in securing reliable water supplies. As the government continues to allocate funds for water projects, it is crucial for local officials to ensure that these initiatives actually benefit the communities they are intended to serve. The residents of Naswadi are calling for immediate action to resolve the water supply crisis and prevent further suffering during the monsoon season.
