In Gujarat, a two-day workshop was held to improve the efficiency of 97 farmer producer organisations (FPOs) focused on natural farming. The event took place at the Vadatal Swaminarayan Temple and was organised by the Gujarat Natural Farming Science University. Farmers play a crucial role in the agricultural sector. Therefore, they need to be organised and work together to ensure better prices for their produce. Governor Acharya Devvrat addressed the FPO leaders during the event. He highlighted that natural farming methods can yield results similar to chemical fertilizers within the first year.
The workshop aimed to train farmers on five key methods: Beejamrit, Jivamrit, Ghanjivamrit, Mulching, and Intercropping. These methods can help farmers grow crops without relying heavily on chemical inputs. The governor stressed the importance of empowerment through FPOs. He encouraged farmers to use quality seeds and to produce Jivamrit and Ghanjivamrit. He also mentioned the need for guidance from FPOs to ensure farmers can access these quality inputs.
The governor noted that natural farming can enhance soil productivity and groundwater levels while reducing pollution and global warming. He pointed out that the excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides has polluted air and water sources. This has consequences for the food we consume, which may contain harmful chemicals leading to serious health issues.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has initiated separate ministries for cooperation, water, and animal development, recognising the importance of agriculture. The governor remarked that the Prime Minister’s efforts aim to make farmers self-reliant and prosperous through natural farming initiatives.
Acharya Devvrat called on farmers to practice organic farming sincerely. He emphasised that earning consumer trust is crucial. When consumers believe that the grains, vegetables, and fruits they buy are truly organic, they are more likely to pay fair prices. He also highlighted the growing demand for organic products. Farmers who practice genuine organic farming will gain significant benefits.
The Gujarat Natural Farming Science University has been continuously guiding 97 FPOs in natural farming practices. The workshop included expert guidance on various topics to enhance the functioning of these organisations. On the second day, Anju Sharma, the Additional Chief Secretary of Agriculture, Welfare, and Cooperation, spoke virtually to the participants. Dr C.K. Timbadiya, the vice-chancellor of the university, provided a detailed report on the workshop. All FPO representatives, agricultural scientists, and subject matter experts participated actively in the event.
This workshop is a significant step towards empowering farmers. It aims to equip them with the skills and knowledge needed to embrace natural farming methods effectively. By working together, farmers can improve their productivity and income, ensuring a sustainable future for agriculture in Gujarat.
