Young Couple Arrested for Murder of Elderly Man in Rajkot

In a shocking incident in Rajkot, an elderly man was murdered by a young couple after they lost their jobs. The victim, 70-year-old Barkat Lakhani, was found dead on June 6, 2025, in his home located on Shrinagar Street, near the Walkeshwar Society.

The case came to light when 67-year-old Ramzan Lakhani filed a complaint at the Bhaktinagar police station. He reported that his elder brother had been killed. The police suspect that the crime was committed during a robbery, leading them to classify it as a case of murder with robbery.

Following the complaint, various police teams, including the local crime branch, were formed to track down the suspects. Thanks to technical surveillance and human intelligence, the police were able to identify and arrest the young couple involved in the crime.

The suspects, identified as 22-year-old Kishan Vagher from Jamnagar’s Jambhudi village and 22-year-old Snehalba Gohil from Bhavnagar’s Chhatra village, were apprehended by the Rajkot city crime branch. They were arrested near Kankot in Rajkot.

During a press conference, DCP Crime Dr. Parthraj Singh Gohil revealed that the initial investigation indicated the elderly man’s murder was committed with the intention of robbery. Upon searching the victim’s home, police discovered that several gold ornaments were missing.

The police collected and analysed CCTV footage from around the crime scene. They identified two suspicious individuals using an Activa scooter near Barkat Lakhani’s home. The footage showed them changing their clothes and trying to hide their faces, which raised further suspicions.

When questioned by the crime branch, the couple confessed to the crime, stating they committed the murder with the intent to rob. They had both worked as a delivery boy and girl for Flipkart but had lost their jobs two months prior. Facing financial difficulties, they planned the robbery and murder after scouting the area.

The police recovered all stolen items, including valuables worth approximately ₹7,55,000, along with the Activa scooter used in the crime. It was revealed that Barkat Lakhani and Snehalba Gohil had met a year ago regarding a gold loan, which is how they got acquainted.

This tragic event has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the desperate measures some individuals may take when faced with financial hardship. The investigation is ongoing, and the police are working to ensure justice for the victim and his family.
