In a remarkable achievement for wildlife conservation, the population of Asiatic lions in Gujarat has reached 891. This figure was announced by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel during the 16th lion population estimation event. The counts revealed that there are 196 male lions, 330 females, and several cubs contributing to this total. This counting effort involved an extensive use of modern technology, including direct beat verification and block counting methods across 35,000 square kilometers in 11 districts. The project engaged 3,854 individuals, including local village leaders and forest staff, showcasing a strong community effort. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative, Project Lion, aims to enhance lion habitat and population management while promoting local participation and scientific research. The lion population in Gujarat has shown a consistent increase over the years, rising from 327 in 2001 to the current figure. This success is attributed to continuous efforts in wildlife conservation and the strategic use of technology in estimating lion numbers. Digital cameras, camera traps, and even GPS collars were used to track and identify individual lions. Furthermore, the e-gujforest application helped in real-time data entry for lion sightings, improving accuracy in tracking their movements. As the state government continues its commitment to protect this iconic species, the focus remains on sustainable practices that benefit both wildlife and local communities. With the backing of the National Wildlife Board and ongoing initiatives, Gujarat is set to enhance its conservation strategies for the Asiatic lion, ensuring their survival for future generations.
