Gujarat Braces for Unseasonal Rain and Hailstorms Amidst Rising Pollution Levels

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast indicating the likelihood of unseasonal rainfall across various districts in Gujarat from 3rd to 6th May 2025. This weather anomaly arrives amidst escalating air pollution levels, raising concerns for public health and agricultural activities.

Weather Forecast Overview

According to the IMD’s latest bulletin, light to moderate rain and thundershowers are anticipated in several regions:

  • 3rd May: Isolated areas in North Gujarat, including Banaskantha and Sabarkantha, and parts of Saurashtra-Kutch, such as Kutch district, may experience light to moderate rainfall.
  • 4th May: Rainfall is expected to extend to districts like Mehsana, Patan, Aravalli, Panchmahal, Dahod, Mahisagar, Vadodara, and Chhota Udepur in North Gujarat. In Saurashtra-Kutch, Bhavnagar, Amreli, and Kutch are likely to receive showers.
  • 5th May: The rainfall may further spread to districts including Narmada, Surat, Tapi, Valsad, Navsari, and Dangs in South Gujarat, as well as Daman and Dadra Nagar Haveli. Saurashtra regions like Amreli, Bhavnagar, Gir Somnath, Kutch, and Diu are also on alert.

These unseasonal rains are attributed to western disturbances influencing the region’s weather patterns.

Impact on Agriculture

The anticipated rainfall poses potential risks to standing crops, especially in regions where harvesting is underway. Farmers are advised to take precautionary measures to protect their produce from possible damage due to unexpected showers.

Rising Air Pollution Levels

Concurrently, air quality across Gujarat has deteriorated, with several cities recording ‘Poor’ AQI levels:

  • Ahmedabad: AQI at 121
  • Gandhinagar: AQI at 104
  • Mehsana: AQI at 117

These levels indicate increased concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 particles, posing health risks, particularly for individuals with respiratory conditions.

Health Advisory

Residents, especially those in areas with poor air quality, are advised to:

  • Limit outdoor activities during peak pollution hours.
  • Use protective masks when venturing outside.
  • Ensure indoor air purification where possible.

The combination of unseasonal rainfall and high pollution levels necessitates heightened awareness and precautionary measures to safeguard health and well-being.
