World Environment Day 2025: Gujarat Collects 2,700 Kilos of Plastic Waste

On May 23, 2025, Gujarat marked the second day of the World Environment Day (WED) celebrations. The event was part of a nationwide campaign running from May 22 to June 5, 2025. This year’s theme was ‘End Plastic Pollution.’ The campaign aimed to raise awareness about the effects of plastic pollution and promote sustainable alternatives.

More than 100 events took place across Gujarat, involving over 5,000 volunteers. Participants engaged in various activities such as collecting single-use plastics, cleanliness drives, and educational seminars on plastic waste management. The volunteers managed to collect approximately 2,700 kilos of plastic waste on this day alone.

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) initiated this campaign to highlight the dangers of plastic pollution. All municipalities and district offices organized local events to collect plastic waste. This included seminars on avoiding single-use plastics and managing solid waste.

The Forest and Environment Department, along with the Climate Change Department, played a crucial role in this initiative. To ensure effective coordination and monitoring, the MoEF&CC developed the ‘My Life’ portal. This platform will report all activities taking place across the country as part of the campaign.

The global environment day is celebrated every year on June 5. It aims to increase awareness about environmental issues and encourage action from individuals, businesses, and governments. This year’s theme focused on the need to restore land and combat desertification and drought. The event in Saudi Arabia, the host country for WED 2024, will also highlight regional environmental challenges.

World Environment Day, established in 1973, serves as a powerful call to action for environmental protection. It encourages millions of people around the world to participate in activities that benefit the earth. The campaign’s success depends on community involvement and the commitment of individuals to change their habits for a cleaner environment.

As we move forward, the success of initiatives like this will depend on continuous education and community participation. The efforts made during this campaign will set a precedent for future actions against plastic pollution in Gujarat and beyond.
