As the Jain festival of Chaturmas begins, 840 devotees from Ahmedabad have taken part in a remarkable spiritual practice — fasting continuously for 30 days. This group fast, called ‘Masakshaman Tapascharya’, sets a new record for the city. The fast will conclude on August 13 with a special ceremony to honour the participants, where they will be felicitated with garlands. This group includes people from various backgrounds, including 30 children aged 11 to 14, youth, professionals like doctors and chartered accountants, and even an 84-year-old devotee.
While most participants have fasted for 30 days, some have gone much further. One devotee completed 180 days of fasting, while another fasted for 108 days. Several others observed extended fasts of 70, 50, and 45 days, showing immense dedication and spiritual discipline.
Rajratansurishwar Maharaj spoke about the initiative, saying, “We are conducting this mass fasting across various cities. This is our ninth such programme during Chaturmas, and Ahmedabad has seen the highest number of participants.”
Following the felicitation event on August 13, a grand rally will take place on August 14, starting from Vasna and heading to the Riverfront with a decorative procession. The celebrations will end with a special event called Dharm Suryoday on August 15, where all fasting devotees will gather at the Riverfront.
Jainism, known for its emphasis on non-violence and fasting, provides its followers with a path of spiritual growth. The ‘Masakshaman Tapascharya’ is a significant practice where participants aim to purify themselves both physically and spiritually through fasting.
This year’s record-breaking event has attracted attention not only for the sheer number of participants but also for the diversity of the group. Families, professionals, and youth all came together to participate in this profound spiritual journey. It reflects the strong community bonds and shared beliefs within the Jain community in Ahmedabad.
The event is not just about fasting; it is also a time for reflection, community support, and spiritual awakening. Participants often report feeling a deep sense of connection with their faith and the community during this time.
As the world becomes increasingly fast-paced and materialistic, such events serve as a reminder of the importance of inner peace and spiritual practice. The Jain community’s dedication to their beliefs showcases a strong commitment to spiritual growth and communal harmony.
In conclusion, the fasting event led by 840 Jain devotees in Ahmedabad highlights the community’s unity and strength in faith. It serves as an inspiration for many and reinforces the values of dedication and spiritual discipline that Jainism promotes. With the upcoming celebrations and rallies, the spirit of Chaturmas will continue to thrive and inspire many in the community.
