In a remarkable medical achievement, doctors at Nanavati Max Super Specialty Hospital in Mumbai have saved the life of a 16-month-old boy from Ahmedabad. The child was suffering from a rare and deadly liver disease known as Crigler-Najjar syndrome type I. This condition was diagnosed at birth and affects the liver’s ability to process a yellow pigment called unconjugated (indirect) bilirubin. Without treatment, this disease can lead to serious brain damage, known as kernicterus, which can cause dystonia, hearing loss, developmental delays, and severe kidney issues.
The boy’s health was deteriorating rapidly. Despite numerous phototherapy treatments at a local hospital, there was no improvement. Dr. Lalit Verma, Associate Director of the Pediatric Hepatology Department at Nanavati Max Hospital, explained, “Crigler-Najjar syndrome type I is an extremely rare disease. Timely and proper diagnosis is crucial to prevent harmful outcomes. In this case, timely intervention gave the child a new lease on life.”
After careful analysis, Dr. Gaurav Chaubal, Director of HPB Surgery and Liver and Multi-Organ Transplant Department, decided to proceed with a liver transplant. The surgery, which lasted eight hours, involved a portion of the liver being donated by the boy’s mother. Remarkably, just 48 hours after the surgery, the bilirubin levels returned to normal, and the child was discharged from the hospital within ten days.
To benefit the people of Gujarat, Nanavati Max Hospital has opened a special liver and GI OPD in Ahmedabad. This clinic is located in the Kshitij Area Building at 501-502, Navrangpura, and operates every second Tuesday and Wednesday of the month from 11 AM to 3 PM. Expert consultations and timely diagnoses for conditions like newborn jaundice, fatty liver, cirrhosis, and other complex gastrointestinal diseases are now available in the city.
Currently, Nanavati Max Super Specialty Hospital operates 17 outreach centers across four states, establishing itself as the most extensive and modern network for liver and GI care in the country. The successful liver transplant of this young boy not only showcases the hospital’s advanced medical capabilities but also brings hope to many families facing similar health challenges.
This case highlights the importance of early diagnosis and intervention in treating rare diseases. Parents are encouraged to seek immediate medical attention if they notice any unusual symptoms in their children. With advancements in medical science, there is hope for many who suffer from such conditions.
The hospital’s dedication to providing cutting-edge healthcare services continues to make a significant impact in the lives of patients and their families. As a part of its commitment to improving health outcomes, Nanavati Max Hospital aims to expand its services and reach more patients in need of specialized care.
