The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has started the demolition of an illegal nine-storey building named Sana-7. This building, constructed by Salim Jumma Khan Pathan, is located near the Astodia Gate. The demolition began on Monday, heavily protected by police. The operation focused on bringing down the top three floors first, which include two penthouses.

Sana-7 was built in 2019 without any legal permissions. It contains 87 flats, with about 10 units on each floor. Despite numerous warnings and notices from the AMC, the builder continued construction, and people moved in. Over the years, the AMC has sealed the building four times, but each time the seals were broken, and work resumed.

Before starting the demolition, the AMC cut off the building’s electricity, water, and drainage connections. The demolition is expected to last several days as workers carefully dismantle the structure.

The AMC had sought police protection for the demolition on 11 occasions, reflecting the challenges faced in enforcing building regulations. In 2019, the builder challenged the AMC’s actions in the Gujarat High Court. However, there has been no ruling on the case in six years.

A Legal Committee meeting held five months ago recommended disciplinary action against AMC officials who failed to act decisively against illegal constructions. Yet, no show-cause notices have been issued, raising questions about the effectiveness of city officials.

The situation highlights ongoing issues with illegal construction in Ahmedabad. The city has seen a rise in such structures, often built without proper permissions. The AMC is under pressure to tackle these problems and ensure compliance with building laws.

As the demolition of Sana-7 continues, it serves as a reminder of the importance of following legal procedures in construction. It is essential for maintaining public safety and urban planning. The AMC aims to prevent similar cases in the future by enforcing stricter regulations and taking action against violators.

The demolition of Sana-7 is part of a broader effort by the AMC to clear illegal buildings in the city. The authorities are committed to reclaiming public spaces and ensuring that future developments adhere to the law. This operation demonstrates the city’s determination to address illegal constructions and protect its urban environment.

As the demolition progresses, residents nearby are watching closely. Many hope that this action will lead to a more orderly and safe urban landscape. The AMC’s efforts could set a precedent for handling other illegal buildings in Ahmedabad, emphasizing the need for compliance with municipal regulations. The commitment to uphold the law is crucial for the city’s growth and development in the coming years.
