Ahmedabad Braces for New Monsoon Rains After August 15

Ahmedabad has faced a dry spell recently, with no significant rainfall. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts this dry period will last until August 14. However, a fresh phase of the monsoon is expected to begin on August 17. This new spell may bring moderate to heavy rainfall until August 20.

So far this monsoon season, Ahmedabad has recorded 21.45 inches of rain. This amount is 67.62% of the seasonal average. The surrounding Ahmedabad district has seen 16.36 inches of rain, which is 62.21% of its average. As of August 8, there is a rainfall deficit of 6%. This is slightly better than last year when the deficit was 8% at the same time.

The weather until mid-August is expected to be mostly cloudy and hot. Daytime temperatures may range from 32 to 34 degrees Celsius. Some areas may experience light showers, but no major rain is forecasted until the new monsoon phase.

The upcoming rains after Independence Day are anticipated to improve the overall rainfall figures for the season. The southwest monsoon is expected to have an early impact on Gujarat this year. The IMD has forecasted its arrival in South Gujarat between June 10 and 12, ahead of the usual onset date of June 15. This early arrival aligns with earlier IMD forecasts that predicted above-normal rainfall across most of India, including Gujarat.

The country is expected to receive 105% of its average rainfall, which raises hopes for a strong agricultural season. However, this also calls for preparedness for heavy downpours. Major weather monitoring agencies have indicated that this year’s monsoon will be intense and widespread. There may even be stormy conditions in some areas of the state.

Interestingly, before the official pre-monsoon season began, Gujarat already received an average of 31 mm (about 1.25 inches) of unseasonal rain last week. This suggests an active atmospheric build-up, hinting at a vigorous monsoon season.

Last year, the monsoon entered Kerala on May 30 and reached Saurashtra and South Gujarat by June 10. However, it stalled temporarily before fully covering the state by June 27. This year, forecasters expect a more consistent and vigorous progression of monsoon currents.

Residents of Ahmedabad are looking forward to the upcoming rains. Many hope it will bring relief from the heat and improve water levels in the region. Farmers are particularly eager for the rain, as it can significantly impact crop yields. With the forecast of more rain, people are preparing for the changes that come with the monsoon season.

In summary, Ahmedabad is set to receive another round of monsoon rains after August 15. This could enhance the current rainfall figures and provide much-needed water for the city and the surrounding areas. The anticipation of these rains brings hope for a better agricultural season and relief from the summer heat.
