In Ahmedabad, two staff members of a car showroom have been arrested for a significant fraud involving 68 cars. The manager, Jitendra Sharma, and assistant manager, Chirag Dutt, allegedly sold these cars without recording the transactions in the company’s books. This deceit has resulted in a loss of approximately ₹9.71 crore for their employer. The fraud was discovered during an internal audit conducted in July. The company’s CEO, Rajneesh Arora, promptly reported the issue to the police. The audit revealed that 53 second-hand cars were missing, and 15 others existed only on paper.
The police investigation shows that Sharma and Dutt sold the cars to local dealers from April to July. They exploited the company’s practice of buying back old cars when customers purchased new ones. Instead of following this process, they contacted customers directly and sold the cars elsewhere. To hide their actions, they routed some payments through official accounts to create an appearance of normalcy.
Chirag Dutt personally sold 16 cars and collected all the money, in addition to earning a ₹10,000 commission for each sale. This scheme went undetected for months, but the internal audit eventually uncovered the missing vehicle records.
Chirag Dutt had a history of fraud from a previous job, where he reportedly used fake documents to sell a car. Despite this, no formal complaint was filed against him at that time. Authorities have now taken both Sharma and Dutt into custody for their actions.
This incident raises serious concerns about internal controls within businesses. It highlights the importance of regular audits and supervision to prevent such frauds. As businesses grow, they often face challenges in keeping track of their assets and ensuring proper employee conduct. This case serves as a reminder for all companies to review their processes to prevent similar situations.
The local community is shocked by the scale of the fraud. Many people who bought cars from the showroom are now worried about the legitimacy of their purchases. The police have assured the public that they will investigate thoroughly and take necessary actions to support affected customers.
Fraud in businesses is not uncommon, but this case stands out due to the amount of money involved and the betrayal of trust by employees. It serves as a critical lesson for companies in Ahmedabad and beyond about the risks of internal fraud and the need for diligent oversight. As the investigation continues, it will be interesting to see how the company responds to this breach and what measures they will implement to ensure it does not happen again.
