Ahmedabad has recently celebrated the Urban Development Year 2025 in a grand event attended by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. The ceremony took place at Tagore Hall, where various development projects were inaugurated. This celebration coincided with the recognition of Ahmedabad as the cleanest city in India for 2024-25, a title that acknowledges the hard work of the city’s sanitation workers. Chief Minister Patel praised the citizens and the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) for achieving this remarkable distinction among cities with a population of over one million.

The Chief Minister highlighted how visionary leadership can transform cleanliness into a massive public movement, as demonstrated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Today, people of all ages are more aware of cleanliness, making it a natural part of life. The mantra of ‘cleanliness is supremacy’ now resonates from small villages to the largest cities.

Addressing the challenges of urbanisation, Patel mentioned that the increasing population should be viewed as an opportunity rather than a problem. He reminisced about how, as the previous Chief Minister, he initiated effective urban management back in 2005. The groundwork laid during that year has now paved the way for the current celebrations and the development of world-class city infrastructure.

The Urban Development Year 2025 aims to ensure that Ahmedabad is ready to host international sporting events in the future. The Chief Minister assured that necessary infrastructural facilities would be developed to support this vision.

During the event, various policies aimed at sustainable urban development were unveiled. These included the “Policy for Good Construction Practices” and the “Urban Greening Policy” which focus on creating a cleaner and greener environment for citizens. New attractions such as the Moon Trail Park and Glow Garden were also introduced at the Sabarmati Riverfront as part of these initiatives.

In line with the goal of achieving a net-zero carbon footprint, the city has emphasised electric mobility. The first solar-powered electric charging station for electric buses has commenced operations in Ahmedabad, making strides towards sustainable transportation.

Additionally, the Chief Minister reported that over 7 million trees have been planted in Ahmedabad over the last three years, with 320 oxygen parks and urban forests established across various zones. This reflects the city’s commitment to becoming not just a growth hub but also a green hub.

The Prime Minister has set a vision for a developed India by 2047, and the state of Gujarat is determined to contribute towards this goal. The mantra of “earning well, living well” will guide the development of cities as growth hubs by creating a holistic roadmap for urban and rural areas.

Mayor Pratibhaben Jain also addressed the gathering, acknowledging the Prime Minister’s call for urban development. She noted that the various initiatives launched today are crucial for the city’s future.

The event concluded with awards presented to sanitation workers for their outstanding contributions to maintaining Ahmedabad’s cleanliness. The recognition of these workers underlines the importance of community involvement in urban development efforts.

In summary, Ahmedabad’s Urban Development Year 2025 celebrations have set the stage for a sustainable and well-planned future. The initiatives launched aim to improve the quality of life for residents while also promoting environmental sustainability. The city is on a path to becoming a model for urban development in India, reflecting the aspirations of its citizens and leadership.
