Ahmedabad has emerged as a strong candidate to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has officially approved India’s bid for this prestigious event. The final decision on the host city will be made before August 31, with Ahmedabad, New Delhi, and Bhubaneswar in the running.

This bid is part of India’s broader sporting ambitions. Hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games could pave the way for India to bid for the 2036 Olympic Games. The government believes that managing a large event like the Commonwealth Games will provide valuable experience for future Olympic preparations.

During a Special General Meeting, the IOA wholeheartedly supported the 2030 bid. They promised that the Games will be inclusive and feature all medal events. P. T. Usha, the IOA president, stated that the Games will be full-scale, unlike the scaled-back 2026 Glasgow Games. The IOA is keen to make this event as memorable as the 2010 Commonwealth Games held in Delhi.

With Canada withdrawing from the bid, India’s chances of hosting the Games have improved significantly. The IOA plans to include sports where India excels, such as shooting, archery, and wrestling. They also aim to incorporate traditional sports like kabaddi, kho kho, and yoga into the event. A delegation from Commonwealth Sport recently visited Ahmedabad’s venues and expressed satisfaction with their readiness. A larger delegation is expected to visit soon.

The final host city will be announced at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow later this year in November. This will be India’s second time hosting the Commonwealth Games, the first being in 2010.

In addition to the bid discussion, the IOA meeting also covered other important matters. They approved their 2023-24 accounts, appointed a new auditor for 2024-25, and resolved a salary dispute with CEO Raghuram Iyer, fixing his pay at ₹13 lakh per month.

India’s aspirations for the 2030 Commonwealth Games reflect its growing status in the world of sports. The country has previously hosted major events like the 2010 Commonwealth Games and has plans for upcoming international competitions, including the Women’s World Cup cricket.

With a population of over 1.4 billion, India has a rich sporting culture. However, its Olympic history shows that it needs to improve its medal tally. Hosting the Commonwealth Games could boost its sports infrastructure and inspire future generations of athletes.

In conclusion, Ahmedabad’s bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games is a significant step for India. The decision will not only impact the city but also enhance India’s presence on the global sports stage. As the deadline for formal proposals approaches, all eyes will be on the decisions made by the IOA and the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly.
