Ahmedabad Crowned Cleanest City in India

Ahmedabad has achieved a remarkable feat by being named the cleanest city in India for the year 2024-2025. This prestigious title was awarded during the Swachh Survekshan, a cleanliness survey conducted across over 4,500 cities in the country. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) played a crucial role in this success through extensive initiatives and active participation from citizens.

The Mayor of Ahmedabad, Ms. Pratibha Jain, expressed pride in this achievement, highlighting the efforts under the Swachh Bharat Mission, initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The mission aims to enhance cleanliness across cities in India. Under the leadership of Gujarat’s Chief Minister, Shri Bhupendra Patel, various strategies and activities were implemented to promote cleanliness and ensure a cleaner Ahmedabad.

In this year’s survey, Ahmedabad excelled in several cleanliness parameters, including effective waste management, improvement of public toilets, and maintaining cleanliness at public places. This hard work has led to Ahmedabad ranking number one in the ‘Greenest Big City’ category for cities with a population of over one million.

AMC Commissioner, Shri Banchanidhi Pani, elaborated on the steps taken during the cleanliness survey. The process involved a comprehensive inspection of waste management systems, sanitation, and public feedback. The city’s efforts to achieve a garbage-free status were also recognised, as was the implementation of modern technologies in waste management.

One of the key strategies was the door-to-door waste collection system, which ensured 100% daily collection of waste. More than 1,850 vehicles were used to segregate waste at the source, allowing for effective waste processing. The AMC also initiated bio-mining projects at the Pirana dump site, converting waste into energy.

In addition, the city has focused on improving public and community toilets to ensure cleanliness and accessibility. Regular cleaning in residential and commercial areas has been prioritized, demonstrating a commitment to maintaining hygiene standards.

The AMC is planning to introduce more initiatives in the future, including the processing of floral waste from religious ceremonies to create organic fertilizers. A new processing plant will soon be established for this purpose, highlighting Ahmedabad’s commitment to sustainable waste management practices.

On July 17, 2025, during an award ceremony at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi, Ahmedabad received the number one rank for cleanliness from the President of India. This award was accepted by key officials from the AMC, showcasing the collaborative efforts that led to this significant achievement.

The recognition of Ahmedabad as the cleanest city in India reflects the city’s dedication to cleanliness and the active involvement of its citizens. The AMC’s various campaigns and awareness programs have encouraged residents to participate in maintaining a clean environment.

As Ahmedabad continues to set benchmarks in cleanliness, it serves as an example for other cities in India, inspiring them to enhance their cleanliness efforts and promote sustainable practices.
