Ahmedabad Faces Surge in Waterborne Diseases

Ahmedabad, a smart city in Gujarat, is experiencing a worrying rise in waterborne diseases. Diseases like dengue, cholera, and gastroenteritis are increasingly reported. The Municipal Corporation is taking measures to control these outbreaks. They are spraying insecticides to combat mosquito-borne diseases. Special campaigns are being launched to prevent mosquito breeding.

On Tuesday, during a campaign in residential areas, the Municipal Corporation issued notices to 504 units. They collected fines totaling ₹2 lakh. This action comes as cases of dengue, gastroenteritis, and cholera have sharply increased in June and July.

With the arrival of the monsoon season, the situation has worsened. In July alone, Ahmedabad reported 789 cases of gastroenteritis, 795 cases of cholera, 615 cases of typhoid, and 27 cases of cholera. Specific areas like Vatva reported 4 cholera cases, Maktampura had 3, and other localities also reported similar cases.

In July, there were also 135 cases of simple malaria, 23 cases of severe malaria, and 144 cases of dengue. This year, the total number of confirmed dengue cases has reached 305. Areas like Sarsanpur reported 21 dengue cases, Gomtipur had 24, and Baherampura recorded 20 cases.

To tackle the rising threat, the health department of the Municipal Corporation conducted special drives on August 4 and 5. They checked 1,065 units, issuing notices to 504 of them and collecting fines of ₹2 lakh. The western part of the city received the most attention, with 104 notices issued there.

The Municipal Corporation is urging residents to take precautions. They recommend keeping water containers tightly covered and cleaning them regularly. Community awareness programs are also being held to educate people about the symptoms of these diseases and the importance of hygiene.

Municipal officials are monitoring the situation closely. They are working to ensure that health services are equipped to handle the increasing number of cases. Hospitals are on alert, ready to treat patients effectively.

The rise in waterborne diseases is a concern for city officials. They are committed to improving public health and preventing further outbreaks. Residents are advised to stay informed and follow health guidelines to protect themselves and their families from these diseases.

As the monsoon continues, the risk of waterborne diseases may persist. The Municipal Corporation is prioritising health and safety in Ahmedabad, striving to keep the city healthy and safe for everyone.
